We're seeing J Tillman, from Fleet Foxes on the 10th. The Biltmore should be a really lovely venue for this.

Covers [Nov. 20th, 2009|05:26 pm]
Beach House covers Queen

Fever Ray covers Vashti Bunyan

Yim Yames covers George Harrison

Covers are acceptable in that they acknowledge and reinterpret the original artist's work..

But with the internet, and the increasingly contextless onslaught of imagery available, it is all just like this amorphous cloud of inspiration. An idea comes to you and it's difficult to say where it came from. I've had the experience of seeing an artist's work that looks eerily similar to one of my own, initially thinking, did they see my work somewhere? Then you realize that you unconsciously appropriated their work. And that is not a nice feeling.

Whatever. People copy people, appropriation is nothing new.

But this video, I must say, irks me.

The director's treatment for the video was basically a montage of recreations of cool images he found on the internet. Fine. That's been done before. Trouble is, one of the main sources for his wacky internet images was fffffound, which is mainly an art site, and I have a hard time believing he innocently thought they were all internet memes and none of them the work of an artist. At best he was wholly ignorant and just didn't do his research. At worst he took the ideas of other people such as William Hundley and presented them as his own. I've seen Hundley's work prior to this and I like it. I didn't recognize the reference though, and most people wouldn't. I dunno it's pretty yucky.

Furthermore... where is the line between art and meme? Eric's recent adventure in internet-fame was both art and meme. I think the line definitely lies with the intention. One is intentional and one is accidental.

Hmmm... wonder if we'll be seeing any big head music videos this year? :)

Motivation post! [Nov. 18th, 2009|03:39 pm]
I'm slowly starting to chip away at my animation again. Like chocolate slivers off a chocolate mountain. It's hard and I get antsy and distracted being on the computer in evening after a day of it, but whatevs excuses excuses.

I need to start thinking about colour. This Michael Paul Young does some good things with colour.

Diesel - Only the Brave from Michael Paul Young on Vimeo.

I particularly like this, and want to experiment with some similar swimming gradient/ombre textures.

I've been working with particles, the unpredictability of which is mostly frustrating but sort of cool. I don't think I want to rely too heavily on them because of said frustration.

So colour.
And also thumbnails sketches for how the progression will work.

poof.

This song is great.
Atlas Sound - Doctor

Some good news happened on Friday so we did a little cat dance* to this song, and celebrated with some beer and all-you-can-eat sushi. Then we went to check out the Tangents show. The art was pretty good, but in my opinion was totally overshadowed by the space and presentation. I guess I'm used to cramped little gastown galleries with like a little cardboard sign saying beer/wine $3. This was a slick affair with a full bar, sponsor beer on tap, dj, animated ID projected on the wall, hors d'oeuvres ...

Went to the antique mall in Cloverdale, an amazing place! I got some old Mason jars, a cute little overnight bag and a Brownie camera. Not so sure if it'll actually work, but eh.
Also went to my second ever Bonspiel. We were doing really well, but then we got knocked out in the first round of finals, which we were actually quite pleased with because it meant we got to hang out and be warm and drink beer.

Today has just been the rainiest, laziest day of all time. I love it.
Oh and also, the guy that runs Terrible Yellow Eyes posted my illustration. Yay!

EErrrrrrrrric why did you show me this....
I sold Mulva because I really don't need a car, and to encourage use of my bicycle.
I really don't need it at all. But it's as if in 1991 they scoured my future brain and designed a thing that only existed in my dreams.
So great.
Oh well, my bicycle is pretty neat too, I guess.

It's almost Halloween, my absolute favourite holiday! Gotta finish my costume tonight, and baking etc will happen tomorrow.

thanksgiving, life, etc. [Oct. 14th, 2009|12:28 am]
Friday,
Made dinner and off to Tetro, Francis Ford Coppola. An Emily Carr faculty member sat next to me and didn't recognize me. But why would he? He wears rainbow pants and a weird little crocheted beanie. I don't. I corrected the date on my celphone, setting off a chain reaction of a dozen loud alarms that I couldn't shut off, despite my panicked 'cancel' button pressing. Through his teeth he barked at me "DO YOU MIND." Mortified.
The movie was beautiful. Argentina in black and white with theatrical full colour flashbacks.
Saturday,
Rushed to the noon showing of Kimjongilia. The reality of modern day concentration camps is horrifying. Woman behind me shifted and rustled very loudly for several minutes before storming out of the theatre. I've come to the conclusion that a large percentage of VIFF goes are sociopaths. Went home to catch up on all things domestic, laundry etc, and then off to see my grandma. The night nurse was very kind to me, and I remember thinking that was a bad sign. My grandma was sleeping peacefully this time. I spoke in her ear, telling her my favourite memories with her. Walking through the lane with all the different coloured poppies. Cottonwood trees. Her penny cakes. I told her I loved her. There was a smell that I could only identify as death, that stayed with me on my bike ride home. But I felt happy that I'd seen her.
Eric and I went for drinks and board games downtown. We're cheap, and didn't want to drive, so we took my bike. One bike. Kind of our thing we do now, and not a bad little set up with me sitting on the back rack, a bike light clipped to my jacket. Safety first. On the way home (btw, much more fun to double on a bike when drunk) we tried to go through the Wendy's drive-through. Alas, Wendy's discriminates against people who are trying to be carbon neutral. I may have to write a strong worded email.
Sunday,
Off to A Prophet, harrowing Cannes prize-winner.
Turned on my phone, a message from dad, he says 'Mum,' my grandma, passed away. I just stared at the fine print on our new parking ticket. Driving over the Granville St. bridge, the clouds were silver and blinding.
Eric was very sweet to me. Made a comforting meal of mainly farmer's market things.. potatoes with rosemary from my window sill and long island cheese squash soup. Went to the evening show, the very excellent I Killed My Mother. French Canadian, and the director/lead actor was so young! Just turned 20..
A certain colourful Emily Carr faculty member sat in front of us. Seriously, what are the odds? I think this time he recognized me in a way, only this time as the annoying cel phone girl. Hopefully the annoying cel phone girl that he had been only too quick to judge. I was courteous and helpful to my seat mates, the very model of a theater patron.
Monday,
Met with my parents for lunch at the Heritage Grill, where they're showing their first husband and wife show, a collection of paintings of nudes. My dad seemed to be ok, the mood was upbeat. Afterward we went to Army and Navy to look for some cheap boots for my Halloween costume. (She-Ra!) It's a little strange having your parents and boyfriend help you try on what are essentially hooker boots.
That evening we went to In Comparison, a dialogue-less, music-less documentary about bricks. It was actually quite good!
Yesterday,
I had a late lunch appointment to dye my hair blonde. The girl was fairly displeased that she had a head of half natural, half box dye red hair to deal with, and was skeptical it would work. But after conferring with a colleague, she and her apprentice set out to plaster my entire head with foils, with two kinds of bleach. I looked insane, my head was heavy, my eyes were streaming from the fumes, and my appointment morphed into a 4+ hour affair. But I am blonde. And I think I like it. I just have to get used to it.
My sad/happy/strange thanksgiving.

omg. I had been racking and racking my brain.. There's a song they've been playing on more recent episodes of This American Life and it's beautiful, and I knew I had it in my collection somewhere but I couldn't figure it out. It just came up in Itunes!

NY Hotel from The Knife on Vimeo.

What a beautiful song. (video is ok)

We had the lovely Mike and Jess over for dinner the other night. Kind of a scary thing to cook for an actual cook! But they really liked the okonomiyaki that we cooked up on our makeshift grill made of two cookie sheets laid over the stove elements. Made ichigo daifuku too which is my new fave of all time. I learned how to make it from a dog!

In other news, I officially think Twin Peaks is the best TV show ever created.

A bit ago I received a package in the mail, a hand-drawing covered unlabeled cassette tape that I forgot I ordered from Myspace (haha. incongruous much?) I popped it in the ol' stereo and it was pretty great, but I totally had no idea who to tell Eric it was.
I just stumbled upon the band again, and it's Explode Into Colours!

I want to live in Portland now real bad! Dang, man!

Shpeaking of live musics, Sasquatch? Really great. And totally what I needed, but man it is HARD WORK being at Sasquatch. Scorching heat during the day, freezing cold at night, nine dollar beers, fitful sleep due to all-night partying in the campground and NO HYGIENE for 4.5 days. By the time I arrived at home my hair was straw, my skin burnt red and layered with sunscreen and dust, and my face was inexplicably swollen up.
Madcap is the best way I can describe it.

[Mood |@$%&!!!]
[Music |Fleet Foxes - Sun Giant]

I want this painting so hard

But $600... Game over, man.
I know that's more than reasonable for kickass original art. But fo sho my particular line of work is not recession-proof and purchases such as this must be given considerable thought.

Gah! Screw you Magic Pony! Screw you Team Macho! I guess I will store it away in my memory banks like I did for this print and that jacket.. If still obsessed with it in several months, the deed will have to be done.
